Railway tunnel, disused.
Google Earth aerial image shows the south entrance to the tunnel under the "Finnieston" pub on Argyle Street and the arched ashlar portal can be seen from the lane to the rear of the pub (off Corruna Street).
If you ever wondered why the two storey Georgian building was never replaced by taller Victorian tenements, it is because the tunnel runs only a few feet below. The beer garden of the pub sits on top of the portal.
The tunnel heads north under the full length of Kelvingrove Street and directly under the decorative gates to Kelvingrove Park at Royal Terrace before continuing under the park to Eldon Street. South of the portal the disused rail line continued in a deep open cutting to the north portal of the St Vincent Crescent Tunnel.
Alternative Names: None recorded.
Notes: See Kelvingrove Tunnel [N Portal] for main entry.
1125 and1129 Argyle Street (now the Finnieston Pub) was built c. 1800. The tunnel constructed c. 1847 must have been dug out below the building.
