Ironstone Pit (19th Century).
A highly extensive blackband ironstone mine complex contiguous with workings of the Broadley, Merksworth & Langlands pits (see abandonment plan in refs for layout). From N to S, the axis of the mine measures c. 1.6km. The 155 fms [283m] shaft at the given 8 fig. coordinates was at the southern end of the main section that extended N beyond Meikle Broadlie. The southern section was connected by a mine through whin, and extended S almost as far as the Caaf Water at ~[NS 2822 4859]. The mine, which shows survey dates from 1861 nearest the shaft on the AP, was operated by Merry & Cunninghame and was abandoned in 1876.
