Railway Tunnel (19th Century, blocked).
Rosehall Tunnel was a railway tunnel in the mining village of New Rosehall, now a suburb of Coatbridge. It ran from Rosehall Colliery (1855-1940) to the Monkland and Kirkintilloch Railway in Whifflet.
The blocked NE portal is buried beneath the E side of Whifflet St (A725) at a point just SW of a Scout Hall at Bute St where a section of the original railway wall remains. The SW portal was located at what is now a grassy embankment below the SW extremity of Margaret St.
The tunnel appears with rails on 1864 & 1895 OS maps (surveyed 1858-59), but was evidently defunct by the time of the 1899 6" OS maps on which the railway line ends before both portals.
Alternative Names: None recorded.
Notes: SW portal at NS 7342 6346 [given coordinates] to NE portal at NS 7362 6381.
Length of 390m is approx, measured using NLS georeferenced map.
