Mine (Ironstone), abandoned pre-1859.
Shaft buried below housing estate. Shown as previously being at SE terminus of railroad linking this pit to the Carnbroe Iron Works (now demolished). Air shaft, possibly part of this pit, shown c. 180m to N at [NS 7488 6343] in area now occupied by a bus turning circle.
Alternative Names: Carnbroe Ironstone Pit, Carnbroe Ironstone Pit No. 6
Notes: Shown as 'Old Ironstone Pit' on 1864 OS map. Given coordinates derived from BGS GeoIndex, which names it as No.6, although No.6 Pit is shown to be further NW (beside No.2 Pit) on abandonment plan of Sweethills ironstone workings. Geol. Survey map states "Pal. at 45 fms" [82m].
Fatal Colliery Accident - A miner, of the name of John Johnston, was killed in one of the pits at Carnbroe Ironworks, a few days ago by a fall of the roof. [Glasgow Herald 3 August 1846]. An additional death due to falling ironstone is also recorded from 04/08/1870.
