Ironstone and coal pit (19th Century).
Gartnavel No. 5 (and No.6) worked the Garibaldi and Blackband Ironstone in 1869. [Watson, S.]
Alternative Names: None recorded.
Notes: Location corresponds with G5 of Watson et al., which on geol. survey is labelled "11 fms to B.B.I" [20 m to Blackband Ironstone].
Glasgow Times: "The mine shaft, which was historically called Gartnavel number 5, is one of 1000 known to be under the city... the Weymouth Drive mine shaft, which is estimated to be 14ft by 4ft, sits on a busy route used by residents and children travelling to and from Kelvindale Primary School. Residents were first informed about it by the Coal Authority, who wrote to Carol and Jim Gilbert at number 58 to say it was under their home. But at a recent meeting Kelvindale Community Council, Coal Authority project manager Lee Cammack told residents they now believe it is an ironstone mine and so not their responsibility".
Geo technical tests carried out by Glasgow City Council put the most likely location for the mine shaft in the street outside number 54, but this is not definitive and the local authority say there may be four possible sites."
Given coordinates derived from BGS GeoIndex (slightly N of road).
