Mine (Ironstone, & Coal?), 19th Century.
Excavated Blackband and Garibaldi Claystone ironstone horizons, operational during 1873. Given coordinates place treated shaft site behind No.7 Ascot Ave.
Alternative Names: None recorded.
Notes: Now buried under garden of residential property on Ascot Ave., adjacent to railway line.
Mined ironstone only, unlike the other Gartnavel pits which also produced coal (No.1, and No. 3-8). [Watson et al]
Labelled as 'Ironstone Pit' on 1865 OS 6" map, and No.2 Gartnavel on geological survey that states 36 fathoms [66m] to Lower Possil Blackband Ironstone. 1870 Geol. Survey map also states Garibaldi at 90 fms [164m], but Lower Possil at 36 fms & 25 fms to Main Coal.
Coordinates derived from BGS GeoIndex. Watson's Fig.7 suggests that Gartnavel No2 should be further SE, but naming of this entry is based on label on 1910 geol. survey.
