Mine (ironstone & coal), 19th Century. Site of.

Extensive mine complex in conjunction with the Hutcheson No.2 Pit, extracting four seams (Upper Garscube Blackband, Lower Blackband, Garbaldi, & Clayband ironstones). The area around No.1 Pit shaft (given 8 fig. coords) was sunk to the Lower Garscube ironstone, although both this and the Garibaldi bands were mined below Hutcheson Hill. All four seams were mined in the No.2 pit area, with the overlapping area of these more limited scale workings being centred on approx. [NS 5174 7198]. An access tunnel linked the No.2 & No.3 shafts. See abandonment plan (in refs) for details.

Alternative Names: Hutcheson South No.1 Pit

Notes: Site present to rear of 22 Foswell Place.

Absent from unworked fields on 6" OS map, but bings shown on 1899 versions. Probably closed along with No.2 Garscadden that ceased production in 1883, if not earlier.

Annotated on geol. survey map as 'Site of No.1 Pit Hutcheson 20 fms [36m] to Lower Gars. BB' [Lower Garscadden (Blackband) Ironstone].

8 fig. coordinates determined using OS geolocation tool (geol. survey map), supported by MRA map.
