Mine (Ironstone), 19th c.

Sunk post-1857 / abandoned pre-1896. Wrought multiple ironstone seams, both blackband & clayband. Shaft possibly buried below unused grassy/paved area beside bus stop at junction between Achamore Road & Lochgoin Avenue. A drilling rig fell into this shaft in 1994.

Notes: "On Monday, November 7th 1994 a drilling rig attempting to seal Garscadden No3 pit shaft discovered by Glasgow City Council in September at the junction of Lochgoin Avenue and Achamore Road crashed through the tarmac in Achamore Road and fell into the shaft which was estimated to be some 60 metres deep." Geol. survey map (1912) annotation notes name of 'No.3 Hutcheson' with 39 fms to Upper Garscadden Ironstone and 55 fms [100m] to the Garibaldi Ironstone band. The 1987 Ed. shows the name of Garscadden No.3 and indicates that it reached the Johnstone Clayband Ironstone at 153.6m (also Upper Garscadden, Lower Garscadden, & Garibaldi Clayband ironstone seams at 73, 90 & 93m, respectively).

Absent from unworked fields on 6" OS map, but abandoned workings shown on 1899 versions. Site named as Garscadden No.3 Pit on abandonment plan for Hutcheson (South) No.1 & No.2 pits. Given coordinates derived from BGS GeoIndex.
