Essentially a culvert (but possibly used as a combined culvert and roadway), the 3 m wide tunnel under the Forth and Clyde Canal is often missed beside the later twin aqueducts over the adjacent rail lines. It was constructed c. 1789 to allow the Possil Burn to continue to supply the downstream mills but is also reputed to be a Drover's Tunnel. It was later used as a pedestrian access. It is not clear if this route is still useable (dark, damp and scattered with debris, passible for the brave with wellies). The north end of the surviving tunnel (now largely hidden by undergrowth) is located at the east end of Lochburn Road where a footbridge into the woodlands south of Cadder (previously the site of Lochburn Iron Works).
The tunnel was extended southward at some point.
South of the tunnel a very muddy road curves to where a steep staircase (from its construction ex railway access stair) rises to the golf course.
Alternative Names: Cadder Aqueduct, Halloween Pend
Notes: There is currently no evidence of the Possil Burn which may have been culverted or rerouted.
Lochburn road is improving with modern housing at the west end but to the east it is still industrial and semi-derelict.
