Mine (Fireclay), 20th Century.

Highly extensive grid-like complex with levels in at least four separate fireclay seams. The mine mouth at the given coordinates post-dated the nearby Castlecary Pit and was essentially a new mine dedicated to fireclay as part of the (western) Castlecary Firebrick Works, although it connected with the Castlecary Pit that had previously worked limestone and some 'white clay'.

The workings extended considerably further than those of the Castlecary Pit, mining almost the entirety of the area between the railway and the Forth & Clyde Canal to Netherwood, and SW beyond the Antonine Wall to a point corresponding with the NE part of the industrial estate on Napier Way. The No.1 / 2 seams were also worked on the N side of the F&C Canal, due N of the mine entrance / Works. The abandonment plans in the refs section illustrate the mine layout in detail. The complex was abandoned in 1968.

Alternative Names: Castlecary Mine

Notes: Given coordinates are for the mine mouth (as distinct from Castlecary Pit to E).
