Mines (Oil shale), 19th Century.

"Two small mines, No. 1 to the Broxburn Shale, No. 2 to the Fells? Shale, identified on BGS plan 972. Surfacing close to Oakbank Cottages, these may have been known as Oakbank No. 1 & No. 2 Mines... Serving Pentland Paraffin Oil Works" [Scottish Shale]

Both mine adits are now buried below worked field adjacent to Edinburgh Bypass.

Notes: Given 8 fig. NGR is for the mouth of Mine No.1, and approx. based on location shown on SS' BGS image. Site of neighbouring No.2 Mine mouth at approx. [NT 2780 6681].

Oakbank Cottages no longer exist (position marked by derelict area). Not to be confused with the separate Oakbank mines at Mid Calder, Livingston.

Opencast clay pits were located a short distance to the NE & E, on the S margin of the bypass around [NT 2816 6685].
