Mine (Limestone), late 19th Century.
Extensive pillar-and-stall limestone workings shown on abandonment plan that illustrates detailed layout (see refs). It is possible (if not probable) that much of the workings have been obliterated by recent surface quarrying activities for which there is considerable overlap.
Tunnel from mine mouth trended S for c.900 ft to area of more recent P&S workings which are contiguous with extensive 'old waste' workings both SE of and below the mine mouth area. The SE and SW extremities of the complex are located c.1.8 km SE and c.1.9 km SW of the mine mouth adit at the given coordinates. A pit is/was located at a central position to the 'newer' workings, probably the 'Air Shaft' labelled on the 1899 OS map [see 'Levenseat High Mine [Air Shaft]'.
Operated by Messrs Peter Mitchell & Sons, and abandoned in 1900.
Alternative Names: Levenseat Mine, Leven Seat Mine
Notes: Sometimes referred to as 'Leven Seat Mine'; not to be confused with the separate limestone workings to the N (see registry entry for 'Levenseat No.1 Limestone Mine').
Mine mouth at the given coordinates (8 fig NGR), based on adit shown on geol. survey map.
