Mine (Ironstone), 19th Century.
Workings contiguous with those of pits 1, 2 & 3. Operated and abandoned (in 1873) by William Dixon Ltd. Shaft site now within plantation area (probably buried).
Area to NE of shaft is contiguous with old waste, probably from the older shallow ironstone pits to the E (labelled as "old pits 4 or 5 fms to Cur" [Curdly Ironstone] at ca. [NS 9413 5833] on geological survey map.
Alternative Names: None recorded.
Notes: Workings shown as 'old waste workings' (i.e. probably collapsed) on No.5 abandonment plan. Curdley Ironstone seam 4-8 inch-thick.
Geol. Survey map states: "No.4 8 fms to Cur." [15 m to Curdly Ironstone]. Refuse heap depicted on 1895 OS map, and any features absent from 1853 Ed. (surveyed 1852). Old pits to E.
