Mine (Oil Shale), early 20th Century.
"An adit travelling a substantial distance through unproductive ground to reach reserves of Champfleurie Shale to the north of the Linlithgow - Winchburgh road. The winding enginehouse appears to been sited beside the mineral railway linking Philpstoun Oil Works with Philpstoun No.4 and Champfluerie No.3 mines." [Scottish Shale]
Adit / dook extended c. 400 m from given coordinates to a point at ~[NT 0447 7598] where it met the eastern part of a section of workings (probably pillar-and-stall) that extended E-W for a distance of c.750 m from approx [NT 0392 7607] near Champfleurie Mine to [NT 0469 7615] under N end of field to the N of Gateside.
