Mine (Oil Shale), c.1884-1902.
Extensive area of workings, probably mined by pillar-and-stall in conjunction with Ochiltree mines No.2 & No.3 to the SE. Workings appear to have been mined as two main connected areas: i) a larger, c.1.8 km-wide southern area extending to Wester Ochiltree with NE / SW extremities at ~[NT 0398 7613] and ~[NT 0284 7477], respectively; ii) a c.0.9 km-wide subordinate northern section that underlies most of the large field to the N of Bridgend Farm & has NE / SW extremities at ~[NT 0484 7654] and ~[NT 0401 7619], respectively. Adit at given coordinates now buried & situated along an area of 'rough' beside a golf course fairway/green.
"Driven from a site close to the retorts of Champfleurie (Bridgend) Oil Works, Champfleurie No. 1 Shale Mine remained in production until the closure of the works following failure of the Linlithgow Oil Company Ltd. Houston Coal was also worked from "Champfleurie No. 1" - it is unclear whether this was a separate mine." [Scottish Shale]
Alternative Names: Champfleurie No.1 Mine, Philipstoun Shale Mine No 1
Notes: Served Champfleurie (Bridgend) Oil Works.
Given length based on combination of the NE-SW widths of the two main areas of workings. Given coordinates derived from BGS GeoIndex.
BGS GeoIndex states name of Philipstoun Shale Mine No 1 [sic]
