Mine (Ironstone, & Coal?), early 19th c.
Shaft site was formerly on the grounds of the Waverley Iron & Steel Works (now demolished & reoccupied by an industrial estate). Shaft now buried below tarmac. The pits may be unrelated to the Waverley Works, although the possibility that pre-existing coal works could have been reopened for iron cannot be discounted.
Alternative Names: Burnbank Ironstone Pit
Notes: Geol. Survey map states blackband ironstone at 35.5 fms [65m], although OS map of 1864 shows label of 'Old Coal Pit' pre-dating the iron works.
Given coordinates derived from BGS GeoIndex.
The Waverley Iron & Steel Co Ltd was incorporated in 1881 with its main works in Coatbridge, North Lanarkshire. "The Waverley was a malleable iron works in Coatbridge. Here iron was refined using puddling furnaces and steam hammers to drive the impurities out of molten pig iron. The result was a more flexible type of iron that could be used in construction with less risk of cracking than cast iron. The year after this catalogue was published the Waverley Iron and Steel Co merged with other companies to become part of the Scottish Iron and Steel Co." [NL Museums]
