Mine (Ironstone, & Coal?), 19th c.
Shaft site was formerly on the grounds of the Waverley Iron & Steel Works (now demolished & reoccupied by an industrial estate). Shaft now buried below industrial unit.
Alternative Names: Kipps Coal Pit
Notes: Geol. Survey map states 'BB.I at 24 fms' [blackband ironstone at 44m]. However, an 'Old Coal Shaft' pre-dating the Waverley works (probably to Main and/or Pyotshaw coal seams) is shown at this locality on the 1864 OS map, possibly a separate neighbouring shaft (MRA map shows two shafts at this locality).
