Mine (Coal, & Ironstone?), 19th & early-20th c.

Shaft sunk to coal, now buried under industrial yard. Probably an early/mid-19th c. coal mine (abandoned pre-1859) established alongside a mineral railway, later reopened as part of the Monkland Colliery that operated until c.1920.

Notes: Labelled as 'Old Coal Pit' on 1864 map, and 'Monkland Colliery Pit No.4' on 1898 ed.

BGS map states Spint Coal, Airdrie Blackband Ironstone, & Virtuewell Coal at 10, 24 & 36 fms, respectively.
