Mine (Ironstone), abandoned c.1852.

Small-scale workings in ironstone (mined using the longwall method with sections of waste) which extended E & SE beneath Greengairs Road & mostly underlie the community hall / sports centre grounds (see abandonment plan in refs). Shaft probably now buried below front garden on NW side of Greengairs Rd. Distance from pit situated at NW end of workings to NE extremity below main road at [NS 7882 7070] (two points were linked by a drawing road) is c. 70m.

Alternative Names: Mr Jack's Ironstone Pit

Notes: AP states 5 fms [9m] to ironstone. Shaft that was placed on N margin of road probably now buried below residence. BGS GeoIndex gives coordinates of [NS 78748 70680], although pit location shown on abandonment plan suggests a location marginally further E.
