Mine (Coal), 19th to 20th cent.
Site of shaft that was treated in 1964. This accessed vast room-and-pillar & longwall workings in the Dysart Main & Bowhouse coal seams which connect with Lochhead Colliery [site #10986] ca. 2km to the N, and in-part extend out under the Firth of Forth S of the pit. The mostly grid-in-plan Main Dysart Coal workings are particularly extensive & also join with those of Michael Colliery to the NE [site #10547] & the Lady Pit [site #11773] to the near-immediate E. See mine plans in refs, which show a cross-cut level connecting the neighbouring Victoria & Lady pits, and further room-and-pillar workings in the Branxton Coal.
Coal was exported from the Victoria Pit by ship from the adjacent West Wemyss Dock until 1915, after which the coal was sent to the Hugo Pit / Depot [Site #11771] for stockpiling via the the adjacent Hugo Tunnel [site #3073]. Eventually the coal worked in the Victoria Pit workings was brought to surface at the Lochhead Colliery.
Alternative Names: Wemyss No.7 Pit
Notes: Air shaft plotted by MRA at [NT 3219 9473].
