Old Shaft marked on OS map. Burneye Pit, Alloa Cherry at 66 fathoms (no 2 ft. coal in shaft) marked on Geological Survey map.

A coal pit and shaft, situated to the E of a tramway leading northwards to Devon Iron Works, is depicted on 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Perth and Clackmannan 1866, sheet cxxxiv). The coal pit is not shown on the current edition of the OS 1:10000 map (1978), but there is a spoil tip depicted to the N. [Trove.scot]

Alternative Names: Birnie Pit

Notes: First edition of the 25" OS map, 1861, shows the coal pit and shaft just north of Birnie (a house or farm?), east of the mineral railway.
