Brothie Burn [Nether Carsebridge Culvert Inlet]

Nether Carsebridge, Alloa, Clackmannanshire.

Culvert inlet on the line of the Brothie Burn where it passed under the former bonded warehouses at Nether Carsebridge (now demolished). The site north of the Brothie Burn was in the early 20th century occupied by the Hilton Fire Clay Brick & Tile Works (on the site of Broom Pit).

Alternative Names: None recorded.

Notes: THe Brothie or Brathy Burn flows east to west from Gartmorn Dam to Nether Carsebridge the roughly south to the Forth. It is most likely the original line of the stream predating the dam (built 1713). The mill lade further north flows from the dam west to Keilarsbrae then south to Nether Carsebridge. It is almost certainly entirely artificial. The Hilton or Sauchie Burn rises on the slopes of Gartmorn Hill and is canallized as a series of drainage ditches through Schaw Park before flowinf SW to Sauchie. Its current route is mostly artificial but it may roughly follow the line of an earlier stream.

The Brothie Burn culvert was probably constructed at the same time as the bonded warehouses in the mid 20th century as prior to this there was no development south of the burn. If the culvert follows the original line of the burn, it heads NW before turning SW to the junction with the Gartmorn mill lade (or possibly the Hilton or Sauchie Burn) flowing south from Keilarsbrae.

Do not confuse Sauchie Burn (flowing through Sauchie) with Sauchieburn (two mile south of Stirling), site of the battle of Sauchieburn.
