Whinhall No.1 Pit

Alloa, Clackmannanshire.

Mine (Coal & Fireclay), site located west of the east end of the Alloa Eastern Link Road (A909), north of the reinstated Stirling-Alloa-Kincardine Railway. The site is currently covered in scrub woodland.

Treated shaft now located in area of woodland (reportedly now cleared, revealing bing features). Formed part of Alloa Colliery, with Whinhall No.1 producing both coal & fireclay in 1915-1920 (possibly also1894) [If the site had once been cleared the woodland has since 2003 reestablished itself].

Alloa Eastern Link Road - The construction of a new link road to the east of Alloa, the Alloa Eastern Link Road (AELR), is to be included in the Bill. The link road will provide alternative routes to the east of Alloa, required due to the closure of level crossings at Hilton Road and Hilton Farm ... The AELR will pass through an area of industrial land to the north requiring the demolition of three Warehouses and passing through an area of agricultural land to the south. The presence of mine workings within the vicinity of the site will require consolidation grouting with any mineshafts backfilled or capped.

Notes: Possibly supplied fireclay to the nearby 'Hilton Fire Clay Brick & Tile Works' that was located to NNW at [NS 899 933] (shown along with the pit on 1900 OS 25" map).

Geol. Survey map: Named "No.1" a stated to be 27 fms down to 'Alloa Cherry Coal' seam. Reportedly worked the Lower Five Feet, Mosie, Nine Feet, & Splint coal seams.
