Mine (ironstone & coal), 19th Century.
One of three neighbouring shafts forming the original part of the Blairhall Colliery that extracted ironstone and coal. The shaft was developed from 1873-79 by the Carron Iron Company, targetting the Inzievar Blackband Ironstone that was encountered at 148m.
The neighbouring No.3 Pit [NT 0044 8838] was also an ironstone and coal producer, whilst No.1 Pit [0046 8834]primarily produced coal. These were located just SW of No.2 Pit.
Alternative Names: None recorded.
Notes: Site now buried in woodland.
These original pits were taken over by the Lochgelly Coal & Iron Co in 1880, and later by the Coltness Iron Co. in 1890 who would establish the 'new colliery' a short distance to the north (see database Site #7471).
The 1896 OS maps show the three old colliery pits being served by mineral railway branches, connecting to the main Dunfermline-Stirling NBR line.
Names & coordinates from BGS.
