Mine (ironstone, later coal), c.1850-1925.
Shaft shown on 1920s geological map as 11 1/2 fms [21m] to Lochgelly Blackband Ironstone, later deepened to reach Lochgelly/Dunfermline Splint coal seams.
Treated site now buried below rough grassland E of sewage works.
"Probably dating from around 1850, the pit was sunk deeper, around 1894, to supplement output due to the disappointing results from No. 8 pit and difficulties being encountered at Foulford No. 1.
The No. 9 Pit was also just north of the Gordon fault which threw the coal seams up 35 fathoms. The Dunfermline Splint was encountered at 72 fathoms. The pit, which worked for years in combination with the Foulford, was closed in 1925, as with many others, due to the general economic decline." [Fife Pits]
Alternative Names: None recorded.
Notes: Marked as 'No.9 Pit' on OS 25" 2nd ed. map.
8 fig. coordinates derived from OS georef' tool (using geol' map).
