Mine (ironstone & coal), 19th Century.

Minor ironstone workings, with production of some shallower parrot coals. Shown on ironstone works abandonment plan (see refs), and the corresponding site on 1928 geol' survey map states Lochgelly Blackband Ironstone at 25 fms [46m].

Surveyed in 1856 and therefore older than c.1870 Foulford workings immediately to the north; N limit of No.5 workings corresponds with Cowdenbeath / Foulford land boundary that evidently stopped to avoid encroachment of ironstone (that was eventually mined by Foulford No.2 pit).

Site now landscaped and occupied by woodland as part of Cowdenbeath Golf Course.

Alternative Names: None recorded.

Notes: Shown as 'Ironstone Pit' on 1856 OS map. Although geol' survey map states 25 fms to LO.BB., the abandonment plan shows a passage at 15 fms, which is the depth given on the geological map for the more westerly shaft that the abandonment plan names No.6 Pit (mislabelling?).

Unlikely to be Blackdean No.5 Pit, which would be located further E (on lands of Blackdean).

Given 8 fig. derived from OS georef' tool (using geol' survey map).
