Mines (Lead, Zinc, Copper, Gold).
Beneath & surrounding the village of Leadhills is a remarkably extensive interconnected network of mines which were largely driven during the 18th/19th centuries & follow a complex series of lead ore-rich veins through greywacke. Various trials are also present within hills around the village, in addition to subordinate satellite sites where copper & gold were wrought in small amounts. Evidence of these past workings, the last of which were abandoned in the 1930s, is widespread in the form of numerous spoil tips & depressions marking the sites of former shafts. Most of the former shaft & adit openings have been infilled/buried, although some barriered-off openings remain (e.g. Lady Anne Hopetoun Shaft). Most of these features are protected as scheduled monuments under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Areas Act 1979 due to their national importance.
