Garscadden Burn Culvert (Peel Glen Road Inlet)

Peel Glen Road, Drumchapel, City of Glasgow (Dumbartonshire).

Large culvert inlet visible from Peel Glen Road. Concrete sidewalls, weirs and grilles to catch debris.

Alternative Names: None recorded.

Notes: The culvert was originally assumed to continue down the east side of Peel Glen Road following the line of the former open drain to the junction with Summerhill Road where it turns 90 degrees then follows Summerhill Road to the site of Garscadden Mains.

The original streambed was probably altered (straightened) to form the open drain along the roadside and earlier field boundaries The later culvert may have been rerouted slightly (to avoid sharp bends) but seems generally to follow the same route.

From the eastern end of Summerhill Road the original culvert probably continued roughly southeast past the bend in Kinfauns Drive to emerge at an outfall southwest of the football pitches at Colquhoun Park.

A new modern culvert (proposed 2017) may have diverted the line of the stream from Summerhill Road to north of Drummore Road on the southern edge of Garscadden Wood. [No evidence of this (so far)]

Works planned c. 2017 and underway c. 2021 saw the creation of an open section of stream and a balancing pond at the southwestern end of Colquhoun Park as part of the Metropolitan Glasgow Strategic Drainage Partnership and the Colquhoun Park Flood Alleviation Scheme. These works are now largely complete and are in the reinstatement phase with grass re-established and new trees planted. The original culvert probably still exists but may be disconnected at Peel Glen Road.
