Mine (Ironstone), 19th c.
Shaft now buried below grassy parkland, adjacent to path.
Alternative Names: Garscadden No.2 Pit
Notes: There is confusion regarding the location of Garscadden No.2 as there are clashes for names & description between the 1987 & 1953 Geol. Survey maps; the 1953 ed. names this as 'No.2 Garscadden' to Hurlet Coal at 145 fms [265m], whilst the 1987 ed. names this 'Gartconnel No.2' to LGI at 91m. On the latter, 'Garscadden No.2' is 245m to Hurlet Coal, & located further NW under an area of shrubland at ~[NS 5212 7223] (this pit is not shown on the 1953 ed). It is possible that Gartconnel No.2 was referred to as Garscadden No.2 due to its location on the W margin of Garscadden Wood.
Durham Mining Museum site states "Garscadden, No. 2 (Ironstone or Fireclay)" in accident reports (involving the cage being raised before a proper signal was made, & being crushed by a log of wood). The Garscadden Colliery, operated by Merry & Cunningham, extracted both ironstone & coal.
