Rumbling Hole

Arthur Fowlie, S of Bullers of Buchan, Aberdeenshire.

A seacave formed from a vertical rift which extends to the top of the cliff.

It is not navigable and is not known to have been entered at sea level.

The rift is partly open on the cliff top and there are places where wave noises from inside the cave can be heard - see photo 2.

Alternative Names: None recorded.

Notes: The length is scaled from 1st Ed OS and has not been verified by recent measurement.

VR is the cliff height.

OS Namebook for Cruden, Aberdeenshire, p122: "A small cave running into the headland called Arthur Fully, in which the sea rushes with tremendous force, and the noise which it makes, is heard from a hole which comes to the surface above the cliff, is something fearfull."
1st Ed OS 25in indicates a straight tunnel running WNW.
Photo 1 shows the entrance with the narrow rift slot running all the way to the top of the cliff.
Photo 2 shows a hole from which wave noises may be heard in rough weather - perhaps not as fearful as suggested by the namebook.
