Mine (Fireclay & Coal), 20th Century.

Significant mine complex associated with Northrigg Colliery, with a bricked-up adit (No.2) within woodland. The mine mouth (at given coordinates) leads to a drift passage dipping at a gradient of 1 in 4. This complex mined two fireclay seams (Bents Fireclay & Armadale Ball Clay) and connected with coal workings. The Bents Fireclay workings were a considerable distance SW of the mine mouth, found N/E/S of the Tippethill Mine Mouth (No.1), and largely N & S of Torbanehill Farm which the Northrigg complex surrounded. It's SW limit lies at the end of an eleongate extension ending below The Roadhouse at [NS 9460 6563]. The less-extensive Armadale Ball Clay workings were more proximal to the entrance, extending SE as far as ~[NS 9551 6612], beside the 'Garden Pit'. See abandonment plan (in links) for detailed layout.

The adit was located at a roughly central position to the Armadale Ball Coal workings, which extended NW as far as Torbane Farm.

Alternative Names: None recorded.

Notes: Operated by United Fireclay Products, and closed in 1962.

Mine marked on 1967 NG map, showing tramway leading SW to mine mouth from Northrigg Colliery (No.7).

Given 8 fig. NGR coordinates derived from OS georef' tool (using 1962 NG map).
