Tremuda Subterranean Passage (N entrance)

Photo 1 looking down into the W end of the inlet 'Strabandra' from the saddle point along the ridge of Strabandra Knap (a promontory N of Strabandra). Taken near low tide on 8 July 2020. Note the diagonal line dipped to the right above the entrance to this tunnel - which is in the middle. Above the line is Tremuda basalt and below it Dunnottar Conglomerate. The narrow entrance is Tremuda (5) and the one in the corner Tremuda (4). The cliff to the right is also all basalt.
Photo 2 shows this entrance at low tide and very little swell. Note that on the right (W), side of the entrance, the wall is undercut and rounded concavely. In rough weather, the waves hit this and are deflected back instead of going upwards - as would happen if the rack face was vertical and flat. The channel is on the left, overhung somewhat by the angle of the left (E) wall. OK in a calm like this, more difficult in a swell.
Photo 3 shows this entrance when the tide is fairly high. The channel at this end is now much wider.
shows what happens with only moderate swell. Notice how the swell coming NW along Strabandra (a geo) from the left, sometimes coincides with swell coming towards the camera from the S entrance.
