Coal & Ironstone Pit (19th Century).
Shaft site now buried below field / edge.
Alternative Names: Stoopshill, Blair No.1 Shaft
Notes: Given coordinates based on pit shaft location shown on Geological Survey 6" map. Described as coal pit on 1858 OS map (levels in Wee, Smithy & Borestone Coal seams), although Dalry Blackband Ironstone horizon also exploited at 65 fathoms [119m].
A "peesweep" (or peeweep) is a Scottish dialectal name for the lapwing, a black-and-white moorland wading bird known for its distinctive, shrill cry. Also known as a peewit or teuchit.
As with all placenames derived from common plants or animals, there are several sites with similar names so do not confuse this site with any othe Peesweep Pit (i.e. Peesweep Pit, North Baillieston, City of Glasgow).
