Mine (Ironstone, & Coal?), 19th c.

Shaft now buried below area of woodland.

Alternative Names: None recorded.

Notes: Shown as 'Coal & Ironstone Pit' on 1864 6" OS map, and then 'Pit No5' of Hillhead Colliery on the Second Edition (1915). Geol. Survey map states Airdrie Blackband Ironstone at 51 fms [93m]. Given coordinates derived from BGS GeoIndex.

Comparing the Geol. Survey & OS maps, it is possible that the 'ironstone' and 'coal & ironstone' labels for the No.5 & No.2 Hillhead pits are the wrong way around.

Yard formerly served by tram/railway.
