Ironstone pit (19th Century), site of.
Modest-scale complex mined using the longwall method exists almost entirely W of Crow Rd & was divided into two primary segments (N & S), with the shaft centrally located between them:
Southern Block: Measured c.180m from pit shaft to southern extremity at ~[NS 5458 6794], and c.450m from WSW-ENE (AP shows survey dates of 1867-69). Northern Block: c.350 from E-W extremities with northern margin c.170m N of shaft (AP shows survey date of 1873).
Shaft now buried below residential back garden of Milner Road.
Alternative Names: Woodend No. 1 Pit, Claythorn Ironstone Pit
Notes: 'Ironstone Pit' marked on 1865 OS 6" map. AP shows name of 'No.11 Pit'.
Geological survey notes 36 fathoms [66m] to Garibaldi (Clayband) Ironstone seam. 20 fms [36.5m] to U. Garscube (Blackband) Ironstone. Given length approx. based on AP, which probably only represents one of the two 'levels'.
An 'Old Pit' marked at the E end of the southern block was located at [NS 5468 6807] (remnants shown on 1865 6" map). Shaft latterly within the grounds of Woodend Brickfield.
