Mine (Ironstone), 19th Century.

Shaft site buried at head of radiating bing structure along edge of plantation. Mined 5' clayband ironstone with workings conjoining with those of No.8 Pit to the S (see abandonment plan in refs), both operated by the Shotts Iron Co.

Notes: Labelled as "Lochknowe Pit (Ironstone)" beside curling pond on 1st Ed. OS map. Absent from MRA map. Labelled as "No.5 or Lochknowe Pit" on AP. Geol. Survey map (1874) states Lochknowe Pit (Ironstone) 22 fms 36 fms to Ironst.".
