Kingshaw No.11 Pit

Kingshaw Moss, NE of Carluke, Lanarkshire.

Mine (Limestone), late 19th Century.

Relatively extensive pillar-and-stall workings with entrance shaft (at given coordinates) being near the mine's SW margin (majority of workings to NE, extending c.400 m from SW to NE, and c.200 m NW-SE). Abandonment plan dated 1892, mine operated by the Shotts Iron Co. The shaft site is now occupied by overgrown derelict ground.

Alternative Names: Kingshaw Limestone Pit

Notes: Limestone bed varied in thickness from 3'6" to 4' 6". The produced lime was probably transported to the Castlehill Iron Works (also owned by Shotts Iron Co.) for coking purposes, c.f. location beside former tramway (1st Ed. OS map).

This is probably not the 'shaft' marked beside a bing on the 1st Ed. OS map, as the location of this is NW of a kink in the fence on the 2nd Ed. OS map (whereas No.11 is SW of this kink on the AP).

Given 8 fig NGR is approx, based on surface features illustrated on abandonment plan which also appear on old OS maps.
