Mine (Ironstone / Coal), 19th Century.

Treated shaft that was probably operational during the 1870s. Site now within isolated patch of woodland that has grown across the associated bing.

Alternative Names: Merry & Cunninghame's Pit, Oakley No.1 Pit

Notes: Geological survey map states ironstone & coal at 35 & 42 fms [64 & 77m] respectively, probably the Inzievar Blackband Ironstone and Main Blairhall Coal.

Abandoned works shown on 1896 OS map, but is absent from 1st Ed. OS map that was surveyed in 1859 (consistent with Inzievar workings through the 1870s).

The name 'Merry & Cunninghame' refers to coalmasters and ironmasters (Messrs) James Merry and Alexander Cunningham, who owned numerous pits across Central Scotland. As a formal name cannot be found on publicly available data, the M&C's name is used here due to its usage on the abandonment plans for the Inzievar ironstone workings to the north as a result of encroachment. Fife Pits suggests that this 'may' be [Over Inzievar] Pit No.5, although a different owner to Pits 3 & 4 makes this unlikely. BGS give name of Oakley No.1 Pit.

Coordinates to 8 fig. (from BGS).
