Mine shaft(s), sites of.
Situated close to the amalgamation point of the Belton Grain Vein & New Vein. Location consistent with the possible shaft (or inclined adit?) sunk to the highest level of the Belton Grain Mine complex where shallow workings are present & much of the vein has been worked out (see Mine Plan SP1773). Shaft not labelled on OS maps, but spoil tips are present at this locality. Cf. multiple shallow shafts working lead ore close to surface.
See also 'Belton Grain Mine (Engine Shaft)' [site #10135] for background info.
Alternative Names: None recorded.
Notes: Not specifically labelled as shaft on mine plan SP1773, in contrast to the other shafts. Mine Plan SP1772 also shows surface line across vertical section. Several shaft-like features are visible on satellite imagery <50m away from the given coordinates, possibly reflecting extraction from multiple points given shallowness of the workings below.
"Beltongrain appears to have been rather singular, as no other vein in this quarter, with the exception of the Cove Vein, has hitherto borne lead ore so near the surface." [History of Sanquhar]
