Site of mine (Coal, & Ironstone?), mid-19th cent.
Shown as active 'Coal Pit No.4' on OS map of 1856, abandoned by 1894. Geological map states Rough Coal (Ontake Coal) at 51 fathoms [93m]. Mine plan S2763 shows shaft situated over central area of small-scale Ontake Coal Waste worked in conjunction with No.3 Pit, with more extensive areas of workings in the 'Under Ironstone' & Inzievar Blackband Ironstone. The blackband ironstone was encountered at 18 fathoms [33m].
Owners: Forth Iron Company, Merry & Cunningham [Fife Pits]
Alternative Names: None recorded.
Notes: Mine plan S4395 states 109 fathoms [199m] to 4 Ft Coal, although this likely refers to the adjacent 'Comrie Deep Bore' (200m), particularly as Comrie Colliery mine plan S841 states a No.4 depth of 318ft [97m].
