Mine (Coal) / Airshaft, 18th cent.

Site of shaft on the Fordell Day Level, now buried below pond. Sunk pre-1790 & abandoned prior to 1853.

See 'Fordell Day Level [Overview]' (registry site #3511) for main registry entry.

Alternative Names: None recorded.

Notes: Name based on mine plan S4670, that shows the Engine [Pit] immediately N of 'the Doocot', which now corresponds with the S end of a pond. BGS map instead states the Engine Pit is the shaft 110m further SSE, which is termed the 'Blue Pit' by the same mine plan & the MRA. However, the MRA gives the name of the site at the given coordinates as 'Old Shaft (Bye Pit)', which does not match the mine plan that shows the Bye Pit SW of the Doocot (now S of the pond).
