Bog Pit

Crossgates, Fordell, Fife.

Coal mine / Air Shaft (18th Century).

Treated shaft, now below pond.

Alternative Names: Fordell Day Level Air Shaft 6

Notes: Labelled as Bog [Pit] on mine plan from 1790, but named Bye Pit by MRA (that also gives name of Bye Shaft to pit to NW). MRA gives name of Bog Shaft to a pit further N under pond, but mine plan shows that the Bog Pit was SE of the former doocot that situated where the S shore is today (& therefore cannot be under the pond).

Absent from 1st Ed. OS map, but marked as 'Air Shaft' on 2nd Ed (1896).

This pit shaft was not located on the Fordell Day Level, but instead E of it.
