Hermit's Cave [Arbroath]

Carlingheugh Bay, Arbroath, Angus, (Forfarshire).

Small cave or rock shelter at the end of the raised beach at the north end of the south part of Carlingheugh Bay near Arbroath. Slightly inland from Dark Cave and Light Cave. Just north of the steps rising to the cliff top path to Auchmithie.

Previously confused with the tiny rock shelter on the exposed cliff.

'They puttered up past Hermit's Cave, where a lone elderly man used to live not that long ago, apparently, surviving on fish and cockles from nearby. David thought it was fantastic, somehow, that within living memory people had actually been able and willing to live in a cave and survive on what the sea brought them. As if the whole of the modern world had passed them by: the development of towns and cities, the improvements in transport and infrastructure, the concepts of leisure and entertainment - all of it happening to other people somewhere else, while you sat hunkered down in your cave next to your fire, waiting to see what tomorrow would bring in the way of

flotsam, jetsam and food. It was scarcely believable, but somehow comforting in a strange kind of way.' [Tombstoning]

Notes: Access: Coastal path from the E end of Victoria Park and then down to the shore in S Carlingsheugh Bay. Or, from Auchmithie and down the path in the middle of the S part of Carlingsheugh Bay.
