Dunnottar Castle South Cave

A subtidal rift cave whose initial tunnel is at the end of a short, SW facing geo in the S side of the promontory on which the castle is built. At the end of this, there is a lower and dark inner tunnel to the left. The rift appears to be on a fault line - see portion of BGS map.

BGS solid and drift 1:10000 for NO88SE zoomed onto Dunottar Castle and Old Hall Bay. This shows that this cave rift is almost certainly an extension of a fault which is the upper (NE) branch shown dividing in the SW part of the bay.
Photo 1 This cave is at the end of the geo facing the camera and a bit right of centre. It is one of those land facing sea-caves which is hard to spot from the sea. Taken 13 February 20 by N Feilden.
