The small cave on the north side of Dunottar - almost directly below the postern gate. The postern faces east, and is thus is obscured from landward.
From this building [Dunottar Castle, postern gate] a very steep pathway leads down the side of the rock to the water. Here there is a creek, ending in a cave into which at high tide a small boat might be drawn. (1)
Alternative Names: None recorded.
Notes: The cave is about 45 feet [13.7 m] long and 11 ft wide at the mouth, at which point it is about 14 ft high. The floor is covered with large shingle, amidst which water-worn floor tiles, sand-stone roofing slabs, etc., may be picked up, as well as numerous animal bones. (1)
