Castle Haven (cave)

A small intertidal cave at the end of a short geo facing S by W, which curves a bit left so that the rest of the geo is aligned with the cave which faces SSE. The entrance is probably swamped by a springs high tide.

Notes: Access: by sea in the lower half of the tide - eg S from Stonehaven. It is not at all obvious coming NW from Bowduns and is much easier to see coming from the S, round the rocks of Dunottar Castle.

1st Ed 25 in OS shows 'cave' in very small lettering and a dotted outline. It is incorrect in that it shows the S end of the geo facing SSE and turning right so that the cave faces S. In fact it is as the description above and the bend in the geo is to the left as you go in.
Photo 1 The entrance to the geo is the gap in the barnacle line, a bit left of Neale Menzies' left paddle blade. The beach part of Castle Haven is on the left and can be reached down a maintained path from the path to Dunnotar Castle.
Photo 2 shows the entrance to the geo from closer.
Photo 3 shows the cave entrance at 13:19 GMT on 25 January 22, when the tide level was about 1.9 m.
