Sea cave.

A largely open and tidal cavernous sea cave with multiple large entrances and pillars/rock walls. Located along eastern side of the main headland.

Alternative Names: Selkie's Cave, Uamh na Maighdean-mhara, Sangobeg West Cave No.13

Notes: Recorded / measured by I. Greig, April '24.

In Celtic mythology, Selkies were 'seal people' in Northern Scotland that could shapeshift between seal and human forms, typically found on rocky coastal outcroppings . The tidal nature of the cave house would be suited to both forms. The term selkie can also apply to seals in general. In Gaelic, the term Maighdean-mhara was used for both selkies and mermaids.
