Ironstone pit, much probably now lost to opencast mining.
"Pit in the land of Handaxwood, to the Curdly Ironstone at 12 fathoms. The pit does not appear on the 1895 OS map which suggests that this was the last ironstone pit sunk in the area, which operated between 1896 and 1901." [Scottish Shale]. The mine was operated by William Dixon Co.
The No.5 workings extended approx. c.720 ft to the SW, & c.700 ft to the E where a decomposed whin dyke separated these workings from the 'old waste' of No.4 Pit.
