Knightswood No.6 / No.12 Pits

Temple Recreation Ground, Netherton, City of Glasgow (Dumbartonshire).

Mine (Ironstone & Coal), mid- to late-19th cent.

No.12 shaft sunk to Garibaldi Clayband Ironstone at 186m, site of which is now buried below vacant land to rear of community centre. Also encountered coals, and the Upper Garscadden Ironstone (blackband seam, at 159m). Site labelled as Coal Pit on 1860s 6" OS map, although this depicts the adjacent No.6 Pit located to the E. Both pits were abandoned by 1896. No.12 Pit possibly sunk by Summerlee Iron Company between 1875-85, & No.6 coal pit between 1854-70 by Wilson & Co. Mine layout for blackband ironstone, which was worked by the longwall method across the boundary between the lands of Knightswood & Garscube, is shown on mine plan (see refs).

Notes: Labelled as Old Pit on 1898 25" OS map. Derelict site used for the Knightswood Brickworks during late 19th c., now also demolished with site occupied by playing field.
