Mine (Ironstone & Coal), 19th c.

Location of now-treated shaft situated at central position to distinct section of ironstone workings from the 1870s (named 'No.1 Pit', see AP in refs) which are connected with those of No.5/6 Pit to the NE, & Garscube No.2 Pit to the SE. Originally a coal pit beside the Garscube Iron Works, as highlighted by the 1st Ed. 6" OS map. Both the pit & iron works had been abandoned by 1896, along with the Knightwsood Colliery pit located to the W [NS 5409 6962].

See mine plans in refs for extent of mine complex.

Alternative Names: Barclay's Pit, Barclays Pit

Notes: Discrepancy between shaft location on BGS GeoIndex & MRA maps. Former places it below SW margin of roundabout at junction of Netherton Ave / Road [NS 54485 69605], whilst MRA shows it below grassy ground (or car park on W edge of flats). MRA location used for given coordinates.
